LAIMA was founded as a tribute to Marija Gimbutas, a scholar who proposed new interpretative tools for reading prehistory and human origins, intertwining archaeology, symbolism, and myth.
The association aims to contribute to the construction and dissemination of more balanced models of existence, on the cultural, artistic, social, and educational levels, promoting a matristic culture that places at the center the values of care, mutuality, and relationship.
Laima is a Baltic goddess very dear to Marija Gimbutas, sometimes a maiden, sometimes an old woman. She is the one who spins fate, the guardian of sacred wells and springs, the cuckoo that announces spring, the she-bear who protects life and childbirth, the linden tree that brings peace and justice.
